Wave | Ocean Resin Serving Board

There is a category of kitchen object that never gets put away, and a board is usually the first to earn that status. This one is made to be seen. A band of deep blue resin is poured against the acacia along one long edge and breaks into white foam where it meets the timber, so the join between wood and resin reads as a wave running up a beach. The rest of the board is left as plain acacia, which is what stops the effect from tipping into novelty.

The body is solid acacia, a dense close-grained hardwood that has long been the default for boards handled daily, and the resin is cast directly against the timber rather than applied as a surface layer. The board measures 38 by 25 centimetres and weighs around 1.2 kilograms — enough that it stays put on a worktop under a knife instead of travelling, and enough to carry to a table with something on it.

Because the grain of each plank differs, the line where the foam meets the wood is never quite the same twice. Use it for cheese, charcuterie, bread and fruit, or as a plinth to lift a cake or a round of butter off the table, and keep knife work to the timber rather than the resin. Wash it by hand in warm water and dry it straight away rather than leaving it standing wet, and keep it out of the dishwasher — the heat and the long soak are what open up the joint between wood and resin.
