No, it is faux leather over a firm backing. Real leather would stain from wine and oil and could not be wiped down, which is the whole point of a placemat.

Is it sold singly or as a set?

Will a hot plate damage it?

A warm plate is fine. For anything straight out of an oven, use a trivet. Faux leather handles heat from a plate, not from a dish.

Does it slide on the table?

No. The backing grips a wooden or stone surface, so it stays put when a plate is set down or cutlery is dragged across it.
