Twinbeam | Stainless Steel Up-Down Wall Light

The up-and-down wall light is the most useful shape in exterior lighting because it does two jobs from one point: it throws a cone of light up the wall and another down it. This is the plain version of that idea — a brushed stainless steel cylinder mounted vertically, small enough to sit beside a door or repeat along a boundary wall without ever becoming the thing being looked at.

The housing is stainless steel with a brushed finish, the right material for something that will be rained on for years, and it is rated IP65: sealed against dust and protected against water jets, which is the rating to look for on a wall with no porch above it. It measures roughly 16.5 by 10 by 6 cm and weighs about 470 g, so it mounts on ordinary fixings. Both ends take GU10 lamps rather than a sealed module, and the fitting runs at 220 V with a rated lamp life of 50,000 hours.

Because the lamps are GU10 and not integrated, the colour temperature is chosen when you buy bulbs and changed later if the wall or the planting around it changes — a narrow warm beam for brickwork, something cooler and wider for render. Mounted at head height beside a door, the two cones read as an hourglass on the wall; run along a boundary at even spacing, they give rhythm to a surface that would otherwise be flat and dark.
